What does it take to become a firefighter?
Learn more about volunteering at GHFD8
The Glenville Hill Volunteer Fire Company, Incorporated, is staffed completely by volunteers, just like you! Come see what it’s like to be part of a small, dedicated group of volunteer firefighters!
The process begins with you stopping by any Tuesday night from 7pm to 9pm and introducing yourself. By meeting our family in-person, you can get a feel for what we’re like and see first-hand why you will want to be part of Glenville Hill!
Already decided to join - great! The next step is to fill out an application. You can drop it off at 1086 Church Road, Glenville, NY 12302 anytime – but Tuesday nights from 7pm to 9pm are best, because someone will always be at the firehouse!
Once you hand in your application, it will be read at the next Company meeting (first Tuesday of every month) and posted for 30 days. Next, at the company meeting following the 30-day posting, your application will be voted on by the existing members! Its that easy!
We encourage you to attend as many Tuesday nights drills and meetings as is possible, between the day you hand in your application and the night you are voted in. Its a great way for us all to get to know one-another, and for you to know for sure if Glenville Hill will be the right fit for you. You are not required to attend any night, except for the night your application is voted on. You must be present to be voted in as a member of the Volunteer Fire Department. If you are unable to make the vote-in meeting, we will hold your application for the next Company meeting.
Once you are voted in, we will get you started on:
Getting your Fire Department provided physical.
Setting you up with structural firefighting turnout gear.
Start you on your way with new member training.
Encouraging you to take all the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control-provided training you can fit into your schedule.
Providing you with Glenville Hill Fire swag, like tee-shirts, hats and coats.
NONE of the above items will cost you any money! We provide it all for free! (There is a $12 per-year dues assessment you must pay to the Fire Company/Department. Those dues and other income help fund the scholarship program we provide to local, graduating high school students.)
Please Note: New York State law requires us to conduct a background check on anyone wishing to become a volunteer firefighter. Again, there is no cost to you for this background check. New York State requires we check for specific types of convictions, some of which will prevent you from becoming a member of the Fire Department/Company. If you have any questions, feel free to stop in any Tuesday evening and ask us in person or e-mail us at Contact.Us@GlenvilleHillFire.com.
Stop by, talk to us, fill out an application and get started on the next chapter of your life by becoming a Glenville Hill firefighter!
